Transcript
I’m Dr Clare Craig, I’m a pathologists and with the Covid19 Assembly we are going to take an evidence based look at the impact of COVID-19.
Over the past year we have seen over 130,000 deaths attributed to COVID; many families have been left grieving.
COVID is a serious condition and the result of a novel[new] virus thathas undoubtedly caused many deaths. However there is an increasing amount of evidence that at least some deaths have been mis-attributed.
However, prior to the Coronavirus Act [2020] all notifiable diseases would have been investigated by the coroner, but that stopped for COVID last year.
We believe that in Line with previous practice every death associated with this notifiable disease should be investigated and that is our aim. Any investigation should be founded on evidence and we intend to gather this evidence.
There will be three strands to our approach:
- Peoples’ stories: we will investigate individual deaths be working with friends and family and those who care enough to come forward
- Professional testimony: we will collate information from hospitals and care homes and funeral directors to quantify any issues
- Pilots: We are going to start work in selected regions and investigate deaths within those regions and expand from there.
To do this we need your help. If you or anyone you know has lost someone know whose death was recorded officially as Covid please come forward, in confidence whatever the circumstances.
If you are a professional able to provide testimonial evidence or collate data please get in touch
If you want to know more or to support us go to the Covid19 Assemby website www.covid19assembly.org.
By taking an even-handed look at the circumstances of the reported deaths we hope to ensure that the experiences over the course of this year are thoroughly researched. Taking a compassionate and methodical approach we can acieve a thorough understanding of the issues and where there are lessons to be learned for the future we will all benefit.
Thank you
Dr Clare Craig
